The
Capital Vices
(I vizi capitali, Città Nuova, Rome , 2006; 73 pages).
Most
of us have heard about the "Seven capital vices". But, left out this
superficial or only cultural knowledge, what do we know about this theme? Do we
know which are these vices and what each of them really represents? And do we
understand what is a "vice"? Finally, does today's Christian still
know which is the actual "work" to be undertaken in order to free
oneself from these seven diseases of the soul?
This
short book is a guide (more practical than theorical) to help Christians to
make a serious spiritual work on themselves (through practical ascetical
exercises for everyday's life), beginning from the diagnosis and the therapy of
the seven basic diseases, which are the cause of every psychical and physical
malaise. The book is written in a simple and popular style, though scrupulously
based on the Church Fathers' sentences and teachings (especially of Evagrius
Ponticus, John Cassian and John Climacus).
